Concrete is composed of simple core components: water, which falls from the sky, and aggregate, gleaned from the earth. Yet it is often difficult to predict and control what appears on the surface; it nevertheless adopts the nuances of the cement mixture, mould-making process and weather effects. Fabian Ong sees them as an infinite surface full of pattern, patina and imaginative meaning. Each 1-metre by 1.5-metre sized print shows a 1:1 depiction of a section of an actual concrete wall, transposing a hyper-real representation into the gallery space as a portal back to our industrial surroundings. To create this taxonomic examination, the artist uses a large sensor camera and artificial intelligence software to maximise digital information, preserving minute details. The meticulous reproduction allows the artwork to be scrutinised up-close, enabling the viewer to observe the cracks, smears and patches, machine marks, water traces and tiny holes peppered across the surface.
